Program Highlights
Topics and speakers for this intensive day-long session include:
- Has Diversification Failed Us?
Christopher Geczy, PhD | The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
This presentation takes a deep dive into diversification, portfolio theory, and alternative investments. Examine what defines an alternative investment after two decades of rapid industry growth, the advent of the famous endowment model of portfolio construction, and a major financial crisis. Also review practical considerations for incorporating alternative investments in portfolios; see how seemingly well-diversified portfolios suffered in the recent financial crisis and yet how portfolio theory may not have caused it; and look at methods for distinguishing among alpha, beta, and alternative beta in understanding portfolio risk and return.
Christopher C. Geczy, PhD, is academic director of the Wharton Wealth Management Initiative and adjunct associate professor of finance at The Wharton School. He teaches investment management and co-created Wharton’s first full course on hedge funds and a number of executive education courses. His research includes multi-factor models, wealth management, risk management, asset allocation, the performance of managed funds, and various aspects of equity lending and short-selling. He has published widely in the academic press and appeared in numerous popular media. He’s served on the economic advisory board of NASDAQ, is an editor of the Journal of Alternative Investments, and is on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Wealth Management. He is a founding board member and chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Hedge Fund Association; he serves on the curriculum and exam committee of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA).He serves on the board of directors of the Alexander Hamilton Friends Foundation. He earned a BA in economics from University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in finance and econometrics from the University of Chicago.
- The Tools of Domestic and International Asset Protection
Elizabeth Morgan, JD | Morgan Adler
This presentation is designed to help investment professionals understand the fundamentals of fraudulent transfer law, identify the U.S. state-law methods for exempting a client’s assets from the claims of future creditors, understand the vulnerabilities of limited partnership and limited liability companies as asset-protection tools, name the primary differences between U.S. and foreign protective trusts, understand the primary differences in offshore trust jurisdictions and when it is appropriate to “import the law” versus “export the assets,” and identify the primary U.S. tax filings applicable to a foreign trust structure.
Elizabeth Morgan, JD, represents a wide array of clients faced with multi-jurisdictional tax, estate, and business planning issues. She is experienced in the design of complex estate and business plans for U.S., non-U.S., and dual-citizen clients, and in assisting such clients with their pre-immigration and expatriation tax planning. Ms. Morgan frequently advises clients on the resolution of international tax and treaty issues in connection with their estate and business planning, and serves as outside counsel to several high net worth family offices. She has formulated and administered estate and business plans for individuals and entities with ties to many foreign countries and jurisdictions. In addition to her expertise in the design, administration, and tax compliance of both inbound and outbound foreign trust and business structures, she has an extensive background in traditional probate, trust, and estate administration. A frequent author and speaker in the areas of domestic and international estate planning, asset protection, and foreign trust planning and tax compliance, Ms. Morgan has been quoted in various publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Practical Accountant, Investments & Wealth Monitor, and Bloomberg Wealth Manager.
