In recent years, with the increased popularity of index funds and exchange-traded funds, some investors have maintained that passive investment management is preferable to active investment management. It is argued that the lower costs and greater efficiency in the markets have made passive management not only a viable alternative, but even a preferable choice. Others maintain that, in the long run, active management will outperform passive management, particularly where the manager has an edge in a sector or industry and in less efficient asset classes. This audio broadcast will feature a research director from a passive investment management company and a portfolio manager from an active management company debating the potential benefits and drawbacks of these investment approaches.

Thomas K. McKissick is Group Managing Director, U.S. Equities, TCW. In 1985, Mr. McKissick joined TCW as an Equity Analyst. Since 1990, he has served as Portfolio Manager for the Large Cap Equity Group. He is currently a Portfolio Manager for the Large Cap Value strategy. Mr. McKissick graduated with a BA in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley. Luciano Siracusano III is Director of Research at WisdomTree Investments. In this role, Mr. Siracusano oversaw the creation and development of the company’s proprietary index methodology and other intellectual property. Before joining WisdomTree in 1999, he was an Equity Analyst at Value Line, Inc. Prior to his career in finance, Mr. Siracusano served as a Special Assistant to HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros, and as a Special Assistant to New York Governor Mario M. Cuomo. Creating Sustainable Client Portfolios for Retirement

(originally presented on July 17, 2008)

With 77-million baby boomers moving into the retirement/distribution phase, opportunity for financial advisors to grow their practices is unprecedented. The IRA rollover market alone is expected to generate $1.5 trillion in new manageable assets over the next five years. In order to be optimally positioned to take advantage of this capital shift, advisors must be able to clearly articulate a strategy for helping their clients make their savings sustain them for 30–40 years in retirement. This presentation will help advisors understand how to develop a sustainable withdrawal strategy in retirement utilizing a deterministic model and a high-end growing dividend strategy.
  • Understand the results of a deterministic study into withdrawal rates and strategies
  • Review the eight critical steps of developing a sustainable withdrawal strategy
  • Understand the benefits of implementing a high and growing dividend strategy for retirement.

Jack Gardner is managing director of Thornburg Investment Management and national sales director for Thornburg Securities Corporation, distributor of the Thornburg family of mutual funds. He has been involved in the investment advisory business for more than 30 years. He is the author of How to Write an Investment Policy Statement and is on the policy board for the Investment Fiduciary Leadership Council.

Presented by Steve Lawler
(originally presented on June 19, 2008)
CE Credit: One hour—ethics
Available for purchase through 5/1/09; available for listening through 5/15/09.
The cost of unethical behavior mounts. Rogue traders, government officials, corporate leaders, and religious leaders fill the news with scandals that would be instructive if not so devastating. Yet the real story is not about the grander versions of unethical behavior. It is the day-to-day, moment-to-moment challenges of being an ethical person that each of us faces in our professional and personal life. This presentation looks at current research into ethical behavior to see what we can learn about strengthening our ethical behavior. Steve Lawler is an Officer of the Society for Business Ethics, an organizational psychologist, adjunct faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, and an Episcopal Priest. He led the 2005 IMCA Ethics Think Tank.
