The AIS is designed for investment consultants and wealth managers dedicated to acquiring advanced knowledge needed to manage client portfolios more effectively in today's uncertain, new global economy. During this program, university faculty from the business schools below will share their insight, along with experienced industry practitioners who will lead a series of application-oriented sessions to help advisors better understand how they might apply this new knowledge and these new skills in practice.

Bendheim Center for Finance, Princeton University

Yacine Aït-Sahalia is the Otto A. Hack 1903 Professor of Finance and Economics and the director of the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University. He was previously an assistant professor (1993–1996), associate professor (1996–1998) and professor of finance (1998) at The University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business. He received The University of Chicago GSB Emory Williams Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1995 and was named an outstanding faculty by BusinessWeek’s 1997 Guide to the Best Business Schools. Dr. Aït-Sahalia conducts seminars in finance for investment bankers and corporate managers, both in Europe and the United States and is a consultant to financial firms and derivatives exchanges in Europe, Asia and the United States. Dr. Aït-Sahalia is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, a Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, and a Research Associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also the recipient of the 1997 Michael Brennan Award, the 1998 Cornerstone Research Award, the 2001 FAME Research Award, and the 2003 Dennis J. Aigner Award. He recently served as editor of the Review of Financial Studies and currently serves as editor of the Journal of Econometrics and on the editorial board of a number of academic finance journals. He earned a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993, and is a graduate of France’s Ecole Polytechnique.

Brunel Associates

Jean  Brunel is the managing principal of Brunel Associates, a firm founded in 2001 that offers wealth education and analysis. Mr. Brunel was chief investment officer (CIO) of JP Morgan’s global private bank, CIO of Private Asset Management at US Bancorp and, most recently, CIO of GenSpring Family Offices. He has been the editor of the Journal of Wealth Management since its founding in 1998, and is the author of the book Integrated Wealth Management: The New Direction for Portfolio Managers, as well as many peer-reviewed articles. During his 35+ year career, Mr. Brunel has been based in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia, and has served clients around the world. His three most notable areas of focus have been tax-aware investing, goals-based wealth management, and the role of alternative assets in balanced portfolios. In 2011, Mr. Brunel received the prestigious C. Stewart Sheppard Award from the CFA Institute. This award is presented annually to an individual CFA charterholder in recognition of outstanding contributions in fostering the education of professional investors and the development of programs and publications to encourage continuing education in the investment profession. In June 2012, Mr. Brunel was named the 2012 Multi-Family Office Chief Investment Officer of the Year by Family Office Review. He is a graduate of École des Hautes Études Commerciales in France (HEC) and earned an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Russell Investment Group

Bruce Curwood joined the Russell Investment Group in 1995 as a strategic consultant. Mr. Curwood has extensive experience as a fiduciary and plan sponsor/administrator. His current responsibilities at Russell relate primarily to research, strategy, and client service. Mr. Curwood also has been associated with various external organizations in other capacities, including Investment Management Consultants Association as a board director, the Pension Investment Association of Canada, the Institute of Secretaries and Administrators in Canada, and the editorial committees of Benefits and Pensions Monitor, the Journal of Investment Consulting, and The Administrator. IMCA presented Mr. Curwood with a Stephen L. Kessler Writing Award in both 2001 and 2008 for his outstanding contribution to the field of investment consulting. Mr. Curwood currently serves as an investment advisor for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, for both their pension plan and the mortgage insurance fund ($20 billion). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, an Accredited Director, and has been listed in the Canadian Who’s Who since 1994. Mr. Curwood earned a BComm in economics from the University of Toronto and an MBA from York University.

The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Academic director of the Wharton Wealth Management Initiative and adjunct associate professor of finance at The Wharton School. He teaches investment management and co-created Wharton’s first full course on hedge funds and a number of executive education courses. His research includes multi-factor models, wealth management, risk management, asset allocation, the performance of managed funds, and various aspects of equity lending and short-selling. He has published widely in the academic press and appeared in numerous popular media. He’s served on the economic advisory board of NASDAQ, is an editor of the Journal of Alternative Investments, and is on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Wealth Management. He is a founding board member and chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Hedge Fund Association; he serves on the curriculum and exam committee of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA).He serves on the board of directors of the Alexander Hamilton Friends Foundation. He earned a BA in economics from University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in finance and econometrics from the University of Chicago.

UC Berkeley Haas School of Business

Greg LaBlanc has been a lecturer at UC Berkeley since 2004, teaching courses in finance, accounting, law, and strategy in the Haas School, UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), and the department of economics. Prior to joining the Berkeley faculty, he studied economics, business, and law at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, George Mason University Law School, Duke Law School, and UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). He has previously taught finance, management, law, and economics at The Wharton School, Duke University, and the University of Virginia and has been a consultant in the fields of intellectual property litigation and competitive intelligence. His research focuses on behavior, organizational strategy, and market design. He has received several teaching awards and is currently teaching courses in financial regulation, behavioral finance, game theory, and strategy.

Nigel Lewis has many years work experience in the financial markets, having worked in the City of London, on Wall Street, and taught in academia. He has been an asset allocation strategist, a quant on the trading floor, and a managing director of a $100-billion investment portfolio. He remains active within the investment community and is a member of the Investment Management Consultants Association Technical Advisory Board. A ferocious student of the science of uncertainty and a pioneer in the field of risk analysis, he earned a PhD from Cambridge, and MS degrees in finance, economics, and statistics, and a Master of Research in computer vision, image processing, simulation, and graphics—all from the University of London. He has written five books on risk, published with the world’s largest publishing houses—John Wiley, Palgrave, Risk Books, and Taylor Francis Group. His innovative ideas have appeared in a wide range of professional and academic journals, including the Journal of Investment Consulting, Journal of Investing, Pensions, and the Journal of Wealth Management.

Yale School of Management

K. Geert Rouwenhorst is professor of corporate finance and the deputy director of the International Center for Finance at Yale. Dr. Rouwenhorst also has held visiting positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the International Monetary Fund. He specializes in international finance and asset pricing, including the empirical trade-off between risk and return in developed and emerging stock markets, and portfolio choice. His recent work examines hedge fund strategies, mutual fund settlement, commodity investments, and the history of financial innovation. Dr. Rouwenhorst has published articles in academic and practitioner-oriented journals, and his work has been reviewed in the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and the New York Times. He co-edited The Origins of Value: The Financial Innovations that Created Modern Capital Markets. Dr. Rouwenhorst earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law from Erasmus University and a PhD in business administration from the University of Rochester.

Graystone Consulting at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

Scott Thayer is senior vice president–investments and institutional consulting director for Citi Institutional Consulting in Santa Rosa, CA, which focuses on middle market foundation and endowment clients. Previously, Mr. Thayer taught in the Department of Finance at Chico State University, CA. He serves on IMCA’s board of directors, and he has served on IMCA’s endowments and foundations and practice management committees. He has taught in IMCA’s Endowments and Foundations Certificate Program and the CIMA Level II Program, and he has contributed regularly to Investments & Wealth Monitor and the Journal of Investment Consulting. He is a member of the board of directors of the Association of Professional Investment Consultants (APIC) and is a frequent lecturer and speaker. He earned a BS in finance from California State University, Los Angeles, and a MBA in finance from California State University, Chico.

HighTower Advisors

As a senior member of HighTower’s advisor team, Margaret Towle advises wealthy families and institutional clients on strategic and wealth distribution and investment strategy. She holds the Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA) designation and earned BA, MA, and PhD degrees from the University of Washington-Seattle. Ms. Towle was recognized by Bloomberg Wealth Manager as one of the “Top 50 Women in Wealth Management” in 2009, and she also served as a Kaufman Fellow to the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. She is an angel investor in 100 Women in Hedge Funds, a global association of alternative investment professionals. Ms. Towle currently serves as chair of the Journal of Investment Consulting editorial advisory board and is an editorial advisory board member of IMCA’s Investments & Wealth Monitor. She discussed “The Yale Model—Does It Still Apply? Innovation in the Hedge Fund Space” before the 2010 Hedge Funds Summit and also has appeared on CNBC.

Fortigent, LLC

Scott Welch is a senior managing director and member of the executive committee at Fortigent, LLC, in Rockville, MD. He is a member of the editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Wealth Management and IMCA’s Investments & Wealth Monitor, and he sits on the agenda advisory board for the ABA Wealth Management and Trust Conference. He speaks frequently about investing and wealth management, and he has authored articles that have appeared in the Journal of Wealth Management, Investment Advisor, Bloomberg Wealth Manager, ABA Trust & Investments, IMCA’s Investments & Wealth Monitor, and the Journal of Financial Service Professionals. Mr. Welch earned a BS in mathematics from the University of California Irvine and an MBA in finance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Transportation

Continuing Education (CE) Credits

CIMA®/CIMC®/CPWA® Marks: The conference will be accepted by IMCA for 20* hours of IMCA-sponsored continuing education hours for the CIMA, CIMC, and CPWA designations for attending the entire certificate program. Individuals are responsible for reporting CE to IMCA.
CFP® certification: The entire program will be submitted to CFP Board for review. Information about approved sessions will be available on the CFP Board website. Individuals are responsible for submitting any necessary paperwork and/or fees to CFP Board.
NASBA CPE: IMCA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy as a sponsor of CE on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors (ID 106054). State boards of accountancy have final authority about the acceptance of individual courses. Individuals are responsible for submitting any necessary paperwork and/or fees to their state boards. Upon request, IMCA will provide a certificate of attendance after the conference.
